O n a quiet evening in the home of a friend who shall go unnamed, Jesus took us aside and said with compelling directness, “We leave in the morning for Jerusalem. Everything written by the prophets about me will be fulfilled. The Son of Man will be handed over to the authorities. They will mock him, insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.” We understood none of this. We knew that going to Jerusalem was dangerous business. That point had been made before the affair with Lazarus. But his actually being arrested, persecuted and killed was something beyond comprehension! There seemed to be a deeper meaning but if there were, it was lost on us. We were concerned about survival, his and ours. None of us looked forward to an encounter with Herod's guard. We were frightened.
